The accusations coming from Salem were now far outside any previous pattern of witchcraft allegations: not just women, but men; not just poor local people disliked for being angry or resented for their needi-ness, but leaders of the community. Until recently, historians saw this last group of accusations as a sign that the witch-hunt was spinning out of control. But according to Mary Beth Norton, there were clear and logical reasons for accusing these wealthy and powerful people. Accusers who had lived through bloody Indian attacks in Maine could recall gossip and rumors that pinpointed each of these people as betrayers who were responsible for their torments.

Still, most of these new suspects were treated carefully. English and his wife, Mary, who was also named by the afflicted, were allowed to leave their jail cells during the day, so long as they returned at night.
